On January 11, the New York Transit Museum’s multimedia exhibition “Grand by Design: A Centennial Celebration of Grand Central Terminal” will open at the Riverfront Library in Yonkers.

With the Christmas and New Year’s holidays approaching next week, the MTA has optimized service to help with holiday travel plans. Trains and buses will operate on special schedules to fit the special holiday travel patterns. Details follow for each MTA service, organized by day.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is helping riders get away early for the holiday. LIRR is adding 13 trains to its eastbound afternoon schedule from Penn Station on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, to accommodate the large number of customers leaving work early to begin their Christmas holiday.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is removing the permanent lane closure at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge’s Queens approach during peak morning and afternoon drive times for the next month, giving motorists all six lanes for holiday travel.

MTA New York City Transit brings FASTRACK to the [F] line in lower Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn. [F] trains will be rerouted via the [A] line in both directions between West 4th Street and Jay Street-MetroTech from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for four consecutive weeknights from Monday, December 2 to early Friday morning, December 6.

Drivers heading into Queens on the Throgs Neck Bridge will soon need to stay to the right if they plan on paying at the toll booth. Cash lanes at the Queens-bound Throgs Neck Bridge will be moved to the right side of the plaza beginning Monday, Dec. 9. This new traffic configuration is being put in place in an effort to improve traffic flow at the toll plaza.

All blasting operations for Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway Project are complete. New MTA Long Island Rail Road timetables will go into effect on Monday, November 11 with service improvements on tap for the Port Washington, Main Line/Ronkonkoma, Long Beach, Huntington and Babylon branches.

It was 74-years ago this month that Mayor Fiorello La Guardia pulled a switch to blast the last six feet of rock separating the Manhattan and Queens tubes at the Queens Midtown Tunnel. One photograph from the Bridges and Tunnels Special Archive collection shows the mayor, aided by Peggy MacDonald, the daughter of the construction company’s Chief Engineer, John MacDonald, pulling the switch on Nov.8, 1939.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is making its energy-efficient office building at 2 Broadway in Lower Manhattan more resilient against extreme storms. The changes will better adapt the building to a changing climate as the MTA consolidates its headquarters personnel there next year. At the same time, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has bestowed its Energy Star certification on the building to recognize that MTA’s upgrades there are helping reduce emissions of greenhouse gases that are causing climate change.

The saying, “Everything old is new again,” is true at the Henry Hudson Bridge where MTA Bridges and Tunnels is testing two prototype light poles that marry 20th century design with 21st century technology.

The $212 million Capital project to reconstruct 2,091-feet of roadway at the Bronx approach to the bridge was completed two months ahead of schedule in September 2012. As a result, drivers now have wider 12-foot lanes and new safety shoulders for the first time in the bridge’s 74-year history. The new approach viaduct includes 15 new double-arch piers, new steel girders and six lanes of new, reinforced roadway decking. The project also included adding a new fire standpipe system and new roadway lighting.

The MTA welcomed it's first subway 'pop-up store at the Unon Square Station as part of its new initiative to get hip, small stores to lease space in the short-term. The shops will receive month-to-month leases from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for small retail spaces that are temporarily vacant while the agency is arranging long-term leases.

Metro-North will resume full train service on the New Haven Line Monday morning, October 7, following successful tests of a major new electrical substation at Mount Vernon. A Con Edison feeder cable failure on September 25 knocked out train service in an eight-mile section of the New Haven Line, the busiest passenger rail line in the country. The outage occurred during the construction and commissioning of the new, long-planned, $50 million substation installation that will enable the railroad to increase service on the line.

Procedures have been laid out for weekly and monthly ticket holders on the New Haven Line who were inconvenienced by the September 25 power failure to obtain credits for their future ticket purchases.

The New York Transit Museum’s 20th Annual Bus Festival will take place on Sunday, September 29th from 11 am to 5 pm as part of the Atlantic Antic street festival. Visitors young and old will have the rare chance to board vintage buses and speak with bus drivers and transit historians. Only on display once a year, the vintage fleet is one of the Transit Museum’s most prized collections, offering a physical, moving record of over fifty years of surface transit in the city.

For four nights, NYC Transit employees worked, repairing and replacing track components, cleaning track areas and removing tons of litter and debris.

The MTA Board has approved a contract with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., to design and build the next generation of rail cars for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. The MTA expects up to 676 cars will be assembled at Kawasaki’s plant in Yonkers and anticipates up to 1,500 people will be employed in New York State. The contract will have an ultimate value of $1.8 billion if all 676 cars are built.

Much has been accomplished after eight weekends of Sandy repair work. This is evident in the numbers, which are impressive by any standard.

The new fly over Lily Pond entrance ramp leading to the Brooklyn-bound Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is now open to traffic as part of the ongoing work to improve the ramps and approaches at the bridge. The new ramp, which is wider and has one entrance instead of two, is located about 100 feet south of the existing ramp entrance for drivers heading south on Lily Pond Avenue, and will include a new traffic light. Drivers traveling south-bound on Lily Pond will turn on green signal onto the ramp. The light will be synchronized to take turns with northbound vehicles that are making a left turn onto the ramp.

Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations James Fortunato and Bridge and Tunnel Officer Jimmy Moy and John Esposito were honored at a recent MTA Board meeting for their heroism in rescuing two people trapped inside a burning truck in July. In presenting the three with plaques, MTA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas F. Prendergast said their tale was “straight out of an action movie” and “showed ingenuity, determination, and plain old guts on that day.”

Good news for drivers who use the Henry Hudson Bridge, the permanent lane closure on the Bronx-bound upper level of the bridge, in place since May 2011, has been lifted after work was completed three months ahead of schedule. The work was part of the nearly $32 million rehabilitation project to replace the original 1930’s-era steel curb stringers on the Bronx-bound upper level of the bridge.

A new toll plaza configuration at the southbound toll plaza heading into Queens is moving cash lanes to the right side of the toll plaza only in an effort to improve traffic flow. MTA Metro-North Railroad will be providing regular AM Peak train service on its Hudson Line Monday morning though minimal scattered delays are still possible as the restoration of track damaged by the July 18 derailment of a CSX freight train is nearing completion.

MTA is releasing its proposed 2014-2017 Financial Plan this week. This Plan continues the MTA’s commitment to implementing significant annually recurring cost reductions, totaling $1.3 billion each year by 2017. The Financial Plan proposes $18 million in additional service investments that will improve both the frequency and quality of MTA service.

Metro-North Railroad on Monday resumed normal Hudson Line train service using just a single track as ongoing recovery and repair work shifts to overnight hours following a major freight derailment last Thursday in the area just west of the Spuyten Duyvil station. To facilitate ongoing recovery and repair work, beginning tonight at 10 PM, the Hudson Line will be shut down between Yankees-E. 153rd Street Station and Yonkers Station. In all, about 1,500 customers will be affected on nine northbound and eight southbound trains. The closure will give track gangs space to work in what is a severely constrained location in a narrow rock cut. During the time the line is out of service, an alternate service plan will be in place. At the regularly schedule Hudson Line departure time, customers will take an express train from Grand Central to Mount Vernon on the Harlem Line where they will be picked up by a bus for the trip to Yonkers where they will re-board a train. A similar service will be provided for southbound customers, who will get off the train at Yonkers and take a bus to Mount Vernon to complete the trip by express train to Grand Central. Normal service will resume each morning with the first scheduled departures from Poughkeepsie and Croton-Harmon at 4:15 AM and 4:45 AM respectively. Customers should anticipate scattered 5-to-10 minute delays due to the congestion caused by a single-track operation. This late-night closure will continue through Thursday night and possibly next week. Customers whose destination is in the Bronx or Ludlow station will take buses directly from Mount Vernon West to their destination. Customers should not use regular Harlem Line trains to Mount Vernon West. Shuttle buses will meet Hudson Line trains only. Customers arriving at Mount Vernon West on Harlem Line trains may have to wait up to 60 minutes for a shuttle bus departure, and connections to trains from Yonkers to Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie may not be held. In addition, two earlier trains will be canceled /combined to ensure that train crews and equipment (trains) are in place for the resumption of service in the morning. These canceled/combined trains are as follows: • The 8:33 PM train from Grand Central Terminal to Croton-Harmon is combined with the 8:37 PM train to Greystone. The combined train will depart Grand Central Terminal at 8:37 PM and make all stops from Yankees-E. 153rd Street to Croton-Harmon. Customers who normally ride the 8:33 train will experience up to 16 minutes additional travel time. • The 9:13 PM train from Grand Central Terminal to Croton-Harmon is canceled. Customers will be accommodated on the 9:20 PM train to Croton-Harmon, and will experience up to 12 minutes additional travel time. • The last inbound trains to operate through from Yonkers to Grand Central Terminal are the 7:56 PM from Poughkeepsie (arrives GCT 9:41 PM) and the 9:00 PM from Croton-Harmon (arrives GCT 10:09 PM). • The last outbound trains to operate through from Grand Central Terminal to Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie are the 9:47 PM to Poughkeepsie and the 9:51 PM to Croton-Harmon. • Travel time will be up to 45 minutes longer than normal for customers whose station is between Morris Heights and Ludlow. Customers at Morris Heights, University Heights, and Marble Hill are strongly urged to use New York City Transit bus and subway service instead of Metro-North. • Travel time will be approximately 30 minutes longer than normal for customers whose station is between Yonkers and Poughkeepsie. • Customers at Ludlow, Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil will use Hudson Rail Link buses, which will make stops on the route and NOT stop directly at the train station locations. • Customers transferring to buses at Yonkers and Mount Vernon West should pay close attention to railroad and bus personnel to make sure they get on the right bus. • Despite the intense planning effort for this service, mistakes may happen and unforeseen delays may occur. Metro-North apologizes for the inconvenience and asks its late-night customers for patience as the recovery work continues.

With the temperature stuck in the high 90s and humidity making it feel in the triple digits, the heat wave of 2013 poses some real challenges for customers waiting for the MTA’s air conditioned subways, railroad trains or buses.

A month-long construction initiative to support the East Side Access project will take place this summer, and will impact weekday service from mid-July through mid-August. We are building a concrete track slab in the very busy Harold Interlocking that will allow subsequent tunnel construction to proceed without impacting LIRR service. Eventually, the slab will support a westbound bypass track for Amtrak and LIRR trains, increasing capacity and reliability in this area. To accommodate the work, some key tracks in the Harold Interlocking area will be taken out of service.

The MTA will offer extra railroad service on Wednesday, July 3, to allow customers to get a head start on the Fourth of July holiday. On Thursday, July 4, subways and buses will operate on a Saturday schedule, and the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Building on its successful effort to improve bus service efficiency and reduce travel times along some of the city’s more heavily-traveled thoroughfares, MTA New York City Transit will launch a new Select Bus Service (SBS) route along Webster Avenue, one of the Bronx’s main north-south corridors on Sunday, June 30th.

The 3-year, $32 million project to replace the Henry Hudson Bridge’s original 1930’s-era steel curb stringers on the Bronx-bound upper level is moving to the next phase of work in the center lane where contractors will be rehabilitating bridge joints. The good news for drivers is that once this work is finished, the permanent lane closures that have been in place for several years will be lifted during morning and afternoon peak drive times. Off-peak lane closures will continue through the end of the project, which is on time and expected to be finished this fall.

When the Triborough Bridge opened on July 11, 1936, it was among the most significant public works projects built during the Great Depression, providing jobs for 2,800 workers daily as the project neared completion. Groundbreaking for the bridge took place on October 25, 1929, just four days before the stock market crash that ushered in the Depression. Originally designed to resemble the Manhattan Bridge, work on the municipal project came to an abrupt halt in 1932 with only some piers and parts of the anchorages in place.

Eight eager and well-trained canines – joined by their human partners – entered the ranks of the MTA Police Department’s Canine Unit at a graduation ceremony held on Friday, June 14, 2013, in Grand Central Terminal. The canines, who are roughly 1½ years old and are German Shepherds or German Shepherd/Belgian Shepherd mixes, completed an intensive 14-week course with their human partners in which they learned all aspects of explosives detection, recognition and handling. The first of several ramps being reconstructed and rehabilitated as part of the $50 million toll plaza improvement project at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is opening at Narrows Road South in June. Once the new Brooklyn-bound entrance ramp opens, the old ramp and a portion of the Narrows Road South exit ramp that leads to Lily Pond Avenue will be demolished to make way for the new lower level connector ramp, which will lead motorists directly from the Staten Island Expressway onto the bridge’s lower level

For the first time in four days, Metro-North will operate regular service between New York and New Haven. The service restoration follows round the work to repair damaged track infrastructure caused when a Metro-North train derailed in Bridgeport and was struck by another train going in the opposite direction on Friday, May 17th.

Reconstruction of track infrastructure damaged in a derailment last Friday has progressed to such a degree that Metro-North announced plans today to resume regular train service on the New Haven Line in time for the AM Peak on Wednesday.

The LIRR’s proposal to build track extensions at the existing Port Washington Yard will immediately improve train service for Port Washington Branch customers and also will mean more service to the East Side of Manhattan at Grand Central Terminal once the East Side Access project is completed.
